Abstract

  1. What does Church and Hanks’s paper propose?
An objective measure, the association ratio, based on mutual information, for estimating word association norms directly from corpora, making norms possible for tens of thousands of words rather than a few hundred.
  2. What is a word association norm in psycholinguistics, and why is the standard way of measuring it a problem?
The degree to which one word primes another (people respond faster to nurse after doctor). Measuring it by testing a few thousand subjects on a few hundred words is costly and unreliable.
